Portable Generator or Backup Battery System?

!: Portable Generator or Backup Battery System?

Do I need a battery backup system for my pellet stove or a backup portable generator?

The answer hinges on the length of the "average" power outage where you live. If you live in an area where power outages are infrequent and last less than 10 or 12 hours, a battery backup system for your pellet stove makes the most sense.

Battery Backup System

A 10 hour battery backup system comprised of excellent, yet reasonably price components costs around 0. This is half the cost of a generator system of comparable quality.

Although a portable generator has the capacity to generate power for many appliances, a backup battery system can also be sized to service more than one appliance.

Portable Generator

As I write this article, an ice storm is snapping power lines across the Midwest and hundreds of thousands of households are without electricity. It will take utility crews working round the clock a week or more to restore power.

When a power outage is measured in days rather than hours, you'll need a backup power source for more than just your pellet stove. These would be your survival appliances like the fridge/freezer, stove top burners, well pump, a few light bulbs and, most important of all, the large screen TV.

The most noticeable difference between a battery backup system and a portable generator is the noise. While a battery backup system provides a silent transition to "off grid" power, a portable generator will be a noisy reminder to your neighbors that you had the knowledge of foresight to plan ahead for the safety and comfort of your family.
